Scrub the Day Away

Baby, It's Cold Outside....

Like...REALLY cold for anyone who doesn't live in Florida!

Most of you reading this are probably trapped inside your house in a blizzard as I type this!

So...why not pamper that itchy dry skin while you are stuck at home?

Right MMG...I'm stuck at home...can't get out...8 feet of snow remember!!?

How can you do a full out Spa day when you can't get out your front door?

What if I told you....All of the items you will need to pamper yourself are right in your own pantry and fridge!!!

YAY!!!!!

No need to put on the snow tires and ski jumpsuit!

Moisturizing Body Scrub
Something I can't live without is a good body scrub!
It literally scrubs they day away in my book!
I feel like a shiny new penny after I use a good shower scrub...Ahhhhh!

Here are my recipes for a fool proof shower scrub that will leave you feeling soft, smooth, and moisturized!

Brown Sugar and Cinnamon Body Scrub

1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
1 Tablespoon Cinnamon
1/4 Cup Olive Oil
1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract*
*(Or Vanilla Essential Oil Optional if you have on hand)

Mix all of the ingredients above in a shower proof cup or bowl (no paper cups, lol).
This scrub LEGIT smells like cinnamon rolls!! MMmmm!
It's my GO TO recipe when I want to have an easy pamper session at home.
Feel free to add more or less of the sugar or oil to your own liking, but you want it to be pretty dry, not soupy!
You can also change out the brown sugar for regular sugar or salt. However, brown sugar is the best for sensitive skin and is less abrasive.
You can also use any other oil you have on hand instead of olive oil (Baby oil, Coconut Oil, Almond Oil, Vegetable Oil, Etc.).
Using a scrub on dry skin helps make the most of your scrub. Once the scrub hits the water the sugars start to dissolve, so your scrub effect gets diminished quite quickly.
I recommend jumping into the shower and scrubbing away BEFORE you turn on the water.
Once you have gotten a nice scrub, turn on your hot water and then rinse away the scrub and feel how SOFT and moisturized your skin will be!!
You won't even remember it's like 14 degrees outside!

**Side Note: This mixture also makes a GREAT hand scrub! Perfect for those super dry knuckles!

Lemon Zinger Body Scrub

1/2 Cup Sugar
1/4 Cup Olive Oil
1 Tablespoon Fresh Lemon Juice
Zest of Half a Lemon

Bring a little Florida Sunshine to your shower with this recipe!
Breathe in the uplifting citrus scent and relax!
Mix all of the above ingredients in a cup or bowl and then scrub, scrub, SCRUB!
If you have really rough dry patches around your elbows and knees, use the left over lemon half as an extra scrubby!

Rub the rind in a circular motion on your elbows and knees to double the scrub factor! (The natural oils in the rind help break down dead skin!)

Hair Mask

An area that I think we forget about pampering in the winter months is...
our HAIR!

More specifically, our Scalps!

Have you noticed that the cold winter air makes your scalp more dry, itchy, and flaky?
Why not take care of that problem with just a few items from your pantry??

Whip up this awesome and EASY hair mask to help bring the summer shine back to your tresses and keep the flakes where they belong......
Outside!!!!

Honey and Olive Oil Hair Mask

1/2 Cup Honey
1/4 Cup Olive Oil

Mix the honey and olive oil and apply to damp hair while you are in the shower (washing off your awesome body scrub I hope!)
You can cut this recipe in HALF if you have short hair! You definitely won't need that much.

Massage in circular motions to the scalp and then pull through to the ends of your hair.
Let the mask sit for 10-15 minutes if you have time (which..if you are snowed in...What else do you have to do!?).
Rinse and then wash well (Repeat if hair still feels oily) and condition hair as normal.

Wave BYE BYE to dry hair and a flaky scalp!

Face Masks

Now, we can't forget our face!!!

Nothing is more pampering in my book than a facial!
But...since you are most likely stuck at home, why not make your own pampering face mask?
You can still get pampered right from your own pantry!

*Note* If you have a facial steamer that you normally use to open up your sinuses when you are sick...Pull that thing out and pump up the STEAM!
Open your pores and moisturize those dry sinus cavities at the same time!
If you don't have one AND can get out of your house, they have these at every drug store around! Walgreen's has their own brand for $20!

Nothing preps the skin for a face mask better than a nice steam! Not only does it feel great and helps soothe dry chapped skin, but it opens your pores and primes them to be cleaned out and pampered!
If you don't have one of these, simmer some water on the stove and put a towel over your head over the pot to get the same effect!

Just make sure the water isn't boiling and the burner is OFF!
You don't need any fires!
You can also add a drop or two of an essential oil or steaming syrup to the water to make it even more relaxing and pampering.

(I use Shea Terra Rosemary & Herb Facial Steam Syrup - $18 Here)

Now that your pores are open, move on to the face mask awesomeness!

Here are a few easy mask recipes to help bring moisture and brightness back into your skin.

Oatmeal & Honey Calming Face Mask

1/3 Cup Oatmeal
1/2 Cup Warm Water
2 Tablespoons Honey*
*(Can Substitute for Olive Oil or Plain Yogurt if you don't have Honey)

Mix the Oatmeal and warm water together and let it sit for 2-3 minutes, until it thickens up.
Mix in the honey.
Apply to your clean face and sit back and relax for 15 minutes.

*If you have steeped some black tea lately, save the bags and apply them to your eyes while you do your face mask. The caffeine in the tea bags helps de-puff your eye area!
SCORE!
Just don't use them while they are HOT, lol! Put them in the fridge for an extra de-puffing and cooling effect then apply to your peepers!*

When your 15 minutes are up, scrape the mask off and throw away, then rinse with warm water and apply your favorite moisturizer.

Oatmeal is great for calming the skin. It is perfect for skin that has been hit by the cruel wintery elements lately.
If you have psoriasis, eczema, or sensitive skin, this mask would be perfect for you!
It is calming and not harsh or irritating.
YAY!
Enjoy!

Banana Pudding Moisturizing Face Mask

1 Ripe Banana
1 Tablespoon Honey
1/2 Tablespoon Lemon Juice

Now...this one might sound a little weird, but trust me...It's awesome!!

Mash the banana up with a fork until it is a smooth consistency.
Add the honey and lemon juice and mix well.
Apply on your face and let sit for 15-20 minutes.
Rinse with warm water and apply your fave face lotion!

Did you know that applying bananas directly to your skin has a toning and tightening effect? The vitamins and minerals in bananas have a wrinkle smoothing AND complexion evening effect!
YAAAY!
The honey is a natural moisturizer, and the lemon juice helps reduce the appearance of acne scars and exfoliates.
WIN WIN WIN!!!

If you have any leftover body scrub, use it in circular motions on your lips to kick those chappers to the curb!!
Rinse off the excess sugar, then apply your fave chapstick to lock in the moisture.

Here are a few other things I like to do to make my home spa day feel a little more luxurious...

Make a hot cup of tea. Hot beverages really just are relaxing...I don't care what you say!

Wear fuzzy slippers. Nuff said.

Slather on my thickest body lotion. Once it sinks in..... Baby. Soft. Skin.

Apply some cuticle oil. Your nails need TLC TOO!!!

Make a brownie in a mug. YEP....I said it...Brownie in a freakin MUG! How does chocolate NOT make anything better?? Here's the recipe.

 Brownie in a Mug
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup sugar
2 Tbsp cocoa (natural, unsweetened)
Pinch of salt
1/4 cup water
2 Tbsp Oil
1 to 2 drops vanilla extract

Mix all the ingredients in a glass mug then microwave for 1-2 minutes. Check it at 1 minute and then add additional cooking time if it is still gooey.
Add vanilla ice cream on top for extra yum factor!
